It is time for a new encyclical. It seems that contraceptive pills are polluting the environment and causing male infertility. The L’Osservatore Romano, the Vatican newspaper, reports that the pill pollutes the environment through the release of hormones through the female urine. Now this isn’t a report by some cloistered priest who had been removed from his parish because he was abusing his charges. Indeed not, as it was Pedro Jose Maria Simon Castellvi, president of the International Federation of Catholic Medical Associations.
Through the powers of Google, it seems that he is a doctor of some kind, hopefully an urologist or obstetrician and gynecologist. I hope he doesn’t just play one on Vatican Television Network (VTN) since he continued to discuss male fertility thus: "We have sufficient evidence to state that a non-negligible cause of male infertility in the West is the environmental pollution caused by the pill," he said, without elaborating further. The reason he didn’t elaborate further may be in part due to God’s mysterious ways and a wee bit to do with scientific research: "Once metabolised, the hormones contained in oral contraceptives no longer have any of the characteristic effects of feminine hormones," said Gianbenedetto Melis, vice-president of a contraceptive research association, quoted by the ANSA news agency. Again, through the powers of Google, I couldn’t ascertain whether Gianbenedetto is a medical doctor.
He is one of those wee boys and my Italian isn’t what it used to be, but I have a hunch he is very credible.
Armed with this information and with no other agenda other than saving his peeps from estrogen so the men can have a high sperm count and little boobs, the Papa Benedict XVI put things in perspective for the millions of Catholics: Contraception "means negating the intimate truth of conjugal love, with which the divine gift (of life) is communicated," the leader of the world's 1.1 billion Roman Catholics wrote on the 40th anniversary of a papal encyclical on the topic.
